SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) celebrated the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in Catholic history. The former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago native and naturalized Peruvian citizen, was chosen as the successor to Pope Francis, sparking hope among immigrant advocates for continued papal leadership on migration issues.
“Pope Leo XIV’s election holds profound significance for those dedicated to protecting immigrants and refugees,” said Anna Gallagher, CLINIC’s executive director. “At a time when millions flee violence, poverty, and climate disasters, his voice can reaffirm the Church’s call for compassion and solidarity. We trust he will champion the dignity of migrants, just as his predecessor did.”
The new pope brings firsthand experience with migration challenges from his decades in Peru, where he served as Bishop of Chiclayo. His work with marginalized communities, including migrants, has deepened his understanding of the systemic hardships they face.
Gallagher expressed optimism that his unique background would shape his papacy: “As an American, Pope Leo XIV can offer critical insight into how the U.S. Church can answer the Gospel’s mandate to welcome the stranger. May his leadership inspire global action to uphold the rights of the displaced.”
CLINIC, a nonprofit advocating for immigrant rights, urged the faithful to view the historic election as a catalyst for renewed commitment to justice for migrants worldwide.
