YANGON – In a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties, Russia and Myanmar are in talks to implement mutual visa-free travel for their citizens, according to reports from Myanmar’s state-run media.
The proposal was a key topic of discussion during a meeting held on June 10 between Myanmar’s Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, U Kyaw Soe Win, and Russia’s Minister of Economic Development, alongside their respective delegations. The meeting took place during the Myanmar delegation’s official visit to Russia.
The two sides explored avenues for enhancing cooperation across government and private sectors, particularly through people-to-people exchanges and tourism initiatives. Proposals included the joint organization of Familiarization Trips (FAM Trips), collaborative participation in tourism exhibitions, and efforts to increase the flow of Russian tourists to Myanmar.
A major highlight of the discussions was the potential for a mutual visa-free travel agreement, which would ease visa application requirements and streamline travel between the two countries. Such an agreement is expected to boost tourism, encourage longer visits, and stimulate cultural exchange.
In addition, the two parties discussed practical measures to support the return of Russian government employees currently on extended overseas leave and examined strategies to attract Russian investment into Myanmar’s growing hotel and tourism sector.
The Myanmar delegation also met with representatives from Russia’s Cosmos Hotel Group and BN Group, both expressing interest in investing in Myanmar’s hospitality industry. Talks included Myanmar’s coastal destinations, investment opportunities, and support mechanisms for pilot projects.
The proposed visa-free initiative and growing tourism ties reflect a broader effort by both nations to expand diplomatic and economic cooperation. Should the agreement move forward, it would not only simplify immigration requirements but also open the door to deeper business and tourism exchanges.
