Supreme Court Allows Trump Administration to End TPS for Venezuelans, Affecting 350,000

by jingji17

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday granted an emergency request from the Trump administration, clearing the way for the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans covered under a 2023 designation. The decision leaves nearly 350,000 Venezuelan immigrants at risk of deportation.

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) condemned the move, arguing that Venezuela remains unsafe for return.

“Arbitrarily stripping legal status from hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people is cruel and unjustified,” said Anna Gallagher, CLINIC’s executive director. “The U.S. State Department itself warns Americans against traveling to Venezuela due to dangerous conditions. Instead of revoking protections, the administration should create legal pathways for those fleeing oppression and economic collapse.”

The Supreme Court’s emergency order, issued without full briefing or oral arguments, has sparked confusion among immigrants and their attorneys.

“This sudden decision creates immediate uncertainty for Venezuelan families and the legal professionals assisting them,” said Ilissa Mira, CLINIC senior attorney. “Our network is rushing to help clients who may soon lose their legal status and work permits—many of whom fear returning to a humanitarian crisis.”

Gallagher urged the U.S. to uphold humanitarian values: “We cannot abandon our Venezuelan neighbors who seek refuge here. A just solution is needed for the hundreds of thousands relying on TPS.”

The ruling follows ongoing debates over U.S. immigration policy, with advocates warning that ending TPS could destabilize families and communities.
