Former President Donald Trump announced Wednesday the opening of a waitlist for his proposed “Trump Card” investor visa program, which would offer permanent U.S. residency, work authorization, and a path to citizenship for a $5 million investment.
The initiative, originally pitched earlier this year as the “Gold Card” program, now invites potential applicants to register through the newly launched TrumpCard.gov website. Registrants must provide basic contact information and indicate whether they’re applying as individuals or businesses. While the site promises to notify users when the program opens, it lacks details about eligibility requirements, vetting processes, or implementation timelines.
Potential EB-5 Alternative
The proposed program would serve as a premium alternative to the existing EB-5 visa, which currently requires investments of $1.05 million ($800,000 in targeted employment areas) for permanent residency.
Early Interest Reported
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claimed strong international interest in the program, telling attendees at a Washington, D.C. event last month that he promoted it during recent Middle East travels. “Everyone I meet who is not an American is going to want to buy this card if they have the fiscal capacity,” Lutnick said.
Supporters argue the program could attract wealthier immigrants at a time when other immigration pathways face increasing restrictions.
Legal Hurdles Remain
Immigration law experts question whether the administration can create such a visa without congressional approval, as new immigration categories typically require legislation. No authorizing bill has been introduced in Congress.
Part of Global Trend
The proposal follows similar “golden visa” programs in countries like Portugal, Greece, and the U.K., many of which have been scaled back due to concerns about economic benefits and transparency.
