The Immigration Department (ImmD) announced today (June 18) that the Registration of Persons (ROP) – Kwun Tong (Temporary) Office will cease operations as scheduled in October this year.
Currently, the Kwun Tong temporary office handles various identity card applications. These include the replacement of old smart identity cards, the issue of new cards to juveniles turning 11 or adults turning 18, the replacement of permanent identity cards after eligibility is verified, and the replacement of lost, damaged, or defaced cards.
The office will continue to accept identity card applications until October 11. After that date, it will no longer receive new applications. However, applicants can still collect their newly issued identity cards at this office until October 25. Those who have not collected their cards by then must go to the ROP – Tseung Kwan O Office instead.
Starting June 19, members of the public can book appointments at any of the six remaining ROP Offices for identity card services beginning October 13. Appointments can be made via the Immigration Department’s mobile application using QR codes or through the website www.gov.hk/icbooking. Applicants are encouraged to complete the application form online when booking to speed up the process.
In urgent situations, such as when identity cards are lost or damaged, individuals may visit any ROP Office without an appointment. Staff will assist based on the circumstances of each case. Full address and opening hours for all ROP Offices are available in Annex II.
Eligible applicants may also use the self-service Personal Documentation Submission Kiosks (PDSKs) at Immigration Headquarters in Tseung Kwan O. No appointment is required for using these kiosks. Details on the services offered, as well as kiosk address and hours, can be found in Annex III.
The ImmD reminds the public that all old smart identity cards for those born in or after 1970 became invalid on May 12. Cards for those born in or before 1969 will become invalid on October 12. Residents who have not yet replaced their old cards should do so as soon as possible. Those returning to Hong Kong after the call-up period must replace their cards within 30 days of arrival.
