AILA Leaders Warn of Harmful Policies

by jingji17

Kelli Stump expressed skepticism about the administration’s plans, stating, “President Trump has announced what he calls ‘bold actions’ to address border and immigration concerns, but without specifics, these measures seem unlikely to enhance national security. Instead, they risk destabilizing an immigration system vital to America’s prosperity.”

Stump highlighted contradictions in the administration’s approach, noting that while border encounters are lower than when Trump left office in 2021, he has declared a “border emergency” and ordered military deployment to the southern border. “Militarizing border enforcement politicizes our armed forces and could erode longstanding legal protections against domestic military use,” she warned.

She also condemned the planned halt to refugee resettlement, arguing that it disregards both humanitarian values and community-led efforts to welcome refugees. “These actions appear more about political posturing than solving real challenges. True reform remains ignored,” Stump said.

Public Rejects Extreme Measures, Says Johnson

Ben Johnson echoed these concerns, pointing to polling data suggesting Americans favor pragmatic solutions over harsh enforcement. “The Wall Street Journal’s recent polling shows public opposition to mass deportations. Yet instead of pursuing humane, practical reforms that recognize immigrants’ contributions, President Trump is reviving failed policies that harm families, the economy, and America’s global reputation.”

Johnson specifically criticized the return of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which previously stranded asylum seekers in dangerous conditions, leading to documented fatalities. “Reimplementing this policy circumvents due process and contradicts U.S. asylum laws,” he said.

He also raised alarms over Trump’s intent to challenge birthright citizenship, calling it an “unconstitutional overreach” that disregards foundational American principles. “It’s deeply troubling that these extreme measures are being prioritized on day one,” Johnson added.

AILA confirmed its legal experts will analyze the finalized executive orders in the coming days and provide further insights.
