Asian and Pacific Islander Texans Drive Economic Growth, Report Finds

Houston, Texas – A new report from the American Immigration Council (AIC) highlights the outsized economic contributions of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities in Texas, particularly in workforce participation, housing, and consumer spending. The study, produced in collaboration with Texans for Economic Growth, a business coalition of over 160 members, emphasizes the critical role API residents play in sustaining the state’s economy, with a special focus on the Houston metro area.

Key Economic Contributions

  • $73.4 billion in spending power from API households in 2023
  • $19.7 billion paid in federal taxes, $7.6 billion in state and local taxes
  • 68.9% labor force participation rate, outpacing the statewide average (66%)
  • 65.7% population growth among API Texans from 2013–2023, accounting for 20.9% of Texas’ overall growth

Leaders Emphasize API Texans’ Impact

Rich André, Director of State and Local Initiatives at AIC, stated:”This report quantifies how immigrant API Texans are powering the economy—holding over $55 billion in spending power and paying $2.9 billion in rent. Their contributions are vital to Texas’ prosperity.”

Chelsie Kramer, Texas State Organizer for AIC, added:”With $73 billion in spending power, API residents are shaping Texas’ future. Policymakers must ensure their voices are included in decision-making at all levels.”

Barbara Joe, Director of the Asian Chamber of Commerce Houston, noted:”In Houston alone, API residents contribute $24 billion in spending power and $2.5 billion in taxes. Their entrepreneurial spirit fuels our economy.”

Houston’s API community (7.7% of the metro population) earned $32.8 billion in 2023, retaining $24 billion in spending power after taxes.
Chinese-origin households statewide held $8.9 billion in spending power after paying $3.4 billion in taxes.
