Washington, DC — The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) applauded today’s announcement that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will reinstate international students’ records in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) after facing multiple lawsuits.
AILA President Kelli Stump criticized the agency’s initial revocation of student records, calling it an overreach that lacked proper procedural safeguards.
“This reversal is a victory for the students, universities, and attorneys who fought against ICE’s unjustified revocation of SEVIS records,” Stump said. “The agency’s actions appeared to bypass standard vetting processes, causing unnecessary disruption. While today’s decision brings relief, it’s troubling that erratic policies continue to destabilize the immigration system. We must remain vigilant to prevent such overreach in the future.”
The policy change follows lawsuits filed by AILA members and advocacy groups across the country. The reinstatement ensures that affected international students can maintain their legal status, though concerns persist over broader immigration enforcement trends.
