Washington, DC – The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) welcomed Senator Ruben Gallego’s (D-AZ) newly proposed immigration reform framework, calling it a “critical first step” toward fixing the nation’s broken system.
In a statement released today, AILA Executive Director Ben Johnson acknowledged the urgent need for congressional action, praising Gallego’s blueprint for balancing border security with key reforms, including expanded legal pathways, protections for undocumented immigrants, and measures addressing migration’s root causes.
“The proposal rightly recognizes that voters want both security and sensible solutions,” Johnson said. “However, we urge a stronger focus on due process—ensuring access to legal counsel and fair court proceedings, which are fundamental to a just immigration system.”
AILA expressed readiness to collaborate with Gallego on refining the plan, emphasizing the need for a structurally sound, balanced approach that advances both national interests and humanitarian values.
“A well-designed system must uphold fairness while strengthening America’s future,” Johnson added.
The statement signals early support from a key advocacy group as lawmakers weigh potential reforms ahead of the 2024 election cycle.
