16 Foreign Nationals Detained in Immigration Raid on Kuching Construction Sites

KUCHING, May 8 – A total of 16 foreign nationals were detained during an immigration enforcement operation targeting two construction sites in Kuching on Wednesday.

The operation, led by 35 officers from the Sarawak Immigration Department, began at 9:00 a.m. and involved the screening of 113 foreign workers—comprising 107 Indonesians and six Bangladeshis.

According to Sarawak Immigration Director Abdul Halim Abang Naili, the raid was part of a nationwide crackdown aimed at curbing illegal immigration and enforcing compliance with immigration laws.

“Out of those screened, 16 Indonesians, including five women, were arrested for overstaying their visas or failing to produce valid travel documents,” he said in a statement.

The individuals are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which address entry without valid documents and overstaying respectively.

Abdul Halim emphasized that the department will continue to intensify such enforcement efforts to uphold immigration regulations and ensure national security.

He also urged members of the public to cooperate by reporting any information regarding undocumented migrants through official channels or at the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.

“Every piece of information contributes to our shared responsibility in protecting the nation’s safety and welfare,” he added.
